Bear McCreary, the acclaimed composer behind the stunning soundtracks of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, has revealed that he’d be open to returning to the franchise — even though he feels his chapter with Kratos is largely wrapped up.
In a recent interview, McCreary explained that his work scoring the Norse saga — from the emotional depths of the 2018 reboot to the explosive finale in Ragnarök and its Valhalla expansion — felt like a complete creative journey. Seeing his sheet music displayed at a 20th-anniversary gallery celebrating the series gave him a sense of closure. “It brings a sort of closure to Kratos’ arc… I feel like I told a story,” he reflected.
But while McCreary feels satisfied with what he’s contributed so far, he didn’t slam the door on future collaborations. When asked if he’d be interested in revisiting God of War in some capacity — whether for another game or even the upcoming Amazon Prime TV adaptation — he replied with a grin, basically saying that Santa Monica Studio has “his number” if they ever need him.
McCreary’s work has been a huge part of what makes the recent God of War games so memorable, blending cinematic orchestration with Nordic and emotional themes that mirror Kratos and Atreus’ journey.
Outside the God of War franchise, he’s also expressed interest in exploring new projects — including indie or AA titles where he can experiment more creatively.
For fans hungry to see (or hear) more, McCreary’s openness means there’s still hope his epic compositions could rise again — perhaps in a new saga or medium tied to the world of Kratos.
